Dose escalation of desmoteplase for acute ischemic stroke (DEDAS): evidence of safety and efficacy 3 to 9 hours after stroke onset
<p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> Desmoteplase is a novel plasminogen activator with favorable features in vitro compared with available agents. This study evaluated safety and efficacy of intravenous (IV) desmoteplase in patients with perfusion/diffusion mismatch on MRI 3 to 9 hours after onset of acute ischemic stroke.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> DEDAS was a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized, dose-escalation study investigating doses of 90 ÎŒg/kg and 125 ÎŒg/kg desmoteplase. Eligibility criteria included baseline National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores of 4 to 20 and MRI evidence of perfusion/diffusion mismatch. The safety end point was the rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage. Primary efficacy co-end points were MRI reperfusion 4 to 8 hours after treatment and good clinical outcome at 90 days. The primary analyses were intent-to-treat. Before unblinding, a target population, excluding patients violating specific MRI criteria, was defined.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> Thirty-seven patients were randomized and received treatment (intent-to-treat; placebo: n=8; 90 ÎŒg/kg: n=14; 125 ÎŒg/kg: n=15). No symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage occurred. Reperfusion was achieved in 37.5% (95% CI [8.5; 75.5]) of placebo patients, 18.2% (2.3; 51.8) of patients treated with 90 ÎŒg/kg desmoteplase, and 53.3% (26.6; 78.7) of patients treated with 125 ÎŒg/kg desmoteplase. Good clinical outcome at 90 days occurred in 25.0% (3.2; 65.1) treated with placebo, 28.6% (8.4; 58.1) treated with 90 ÎŒg/kg desmoteplase and 60.0% (32.3; 83.7) treated with 125 ÎŒg/kg desmoteplase. In the target population (n=25), the difference compared with placebo increased and was statistically significant for good clinical outcome with 125 ÎŒg/kg desmoteplase (P=0.022).</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> Treatment with IV desmoteplase 3 to 9 hours after ischemic stroke onset appears safe. At a dose of 125 ÎŒg/kg desmoteplase appeared to improve clinical outcome, especially in patients fulfilling all MRI criteria. The results of DEDAS generally support the results of its predecessor study, Desmoteplase in Acute Ischemic Stroke (DIAS).</p>
Face Detection on Embedded Systems
Over recent years automated face detection and recognition (FDR) have gained significant attention from the commercial and research sectors. This paper presents an embedded face detection solution aimed at addressing the real-time image processing requirements within a wide range of applications. As face detection is a computationally intensive task, an embedded solution would give rise to opportunities for discrete economical devices that could be applied and integrated into a vast majority of applications. This work focuses on the use of FPGAs as the embedded prototyping technology where the thread of execution is carried out on an embedded soft-core processor. Custom instructions have been utilized as a means of applying software/hardware partitioning through which the computational bottlenecks are moved to hardware. A speedup by a factor of 110 was achieved from employing custom instructions and software optimizations
Recent experimental results in sub- and near-barrier heavy ion fusion reactions
Recent advances obtained in the field of near and sub-barrier heavy-ion
fusion reactions are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the results obtained in the
last decade, and focus will be mainly on the experimental work performed
concerning the influence of transfer channels on fusion cross sections and the
hindrance phenomenon far below the barrier. Indeed, early data of sub-barrier
fusion taught us that cross sections may strongly depend on the low-energy
collective modes of the colliding nuclei, and, possibly, on couplings to
transfer channels. The coupled-channels (CC) model has been quite successful in
the interpretation of the experimental evidences. Fusion barrier distributions
often yield the fingerprint of the relevant coupled channels. Recent results
obtained by using radioactive beams are reported. At deep sub-barrier energies,
the slope of the excitation function in a semi-logarithmic plot keeps
increasing in many cases and standard CC calculations over-predict the cross
sections. This was named a hindrance phenomenon, and its physical origin is
still a matter of debate. Recent theoretical developments suggest that this
effect, at least partially, may be a consequence of the Pauli exclusion
principle. The hindrance may have far-reaching consequences in astrophysics
where fusion of light systems determines stellar evolution during the carbon
and oxygen burning stages, and yields important information for exotic
reactions that take place in the inner crust of accreting neutron stars.Comment: 40 pages, 63 figures, review paper accepted for EPJ
Chromosomal location of human genes encoding major heat-shock protein HSP70
The HSP70 family of heat-shock proteins constitutes the major proteins synthesized in response to elevated temperatures and other forms of stress. In eukaryotes members of the HSP70 family also include a protein similar if not identical to bovine brain uncoating ATPase and glucose-regulated proteins. An intriguing relation has been established between expression of heat-shock proteins and transformation in mammalian cells. Elevated levels of HSP70 are found in some transformed cell lines, and viral and cellular gene products that are capable of transforming cells in vitro can also stimulate transcription of HSP70 genes. To determine the organization of this complex multigene family in the human genome, we used complementary approaches: Southern analysis and protein gels of Chinese hamster-human somatic cell hybrids, and in situ hybridization to human chromosomes. Pose-informed deep learning method for SAR ATR
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for automatic target classification (automatic target recognition (ATR)) have attracted significant interest as they can be acquired day and night under a wide range of weather conditions. However, SAR images can be time consuming to analyse, even for experts. ATR can alleviate this burden and deep learning is an attractive solution. A new deep learning Pose-informed architecture solution, that takes into account the impact of target orientation on the SAR image as the scatterers configuration changes, is proposed. The classification is achieved in two stages. First, the orientation of the target is determined using a Hough transform and a convolutional neural network (CNN). Then, classification is achieved with a CNN specifically trained on targets with similar orientations to the target under test. The networks are trained with translation and SAR-specific data augmentation. The proposed Pose-informed deep network architecture was successfully tested on the Military Ground Target Dataset (MGTD) and the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) datasets. Results show the proposed solution outperformed standard AlexNets on the MGTD, MSTAR extended operating condition (EOC)1, EOC2 and standard operating condition (SOC)10 datasets with a score of 99.13% on the MSTAR SOC10

A fim de comentar a multiforme e volumosa bibliografia histĂłrica, foi ela organizada segundo critĂ©rios morfolĂłgicos.
